Winterize Your Cars Tires

It is crucial to make sure your tires are in good condition during the winter season. Your tires give you the ability to grip the road, make safe turns, and stop in a safe amount of time. Your safety depends a whole lot on the condition of your tires. Tips to Maintain Your Tires There are a few ways you can maintain your tires. We suggest keeping your tire pressure at the recommended level which can be found in your vehicles owner’s manual. Be aware that cooler temperatures will change your tire pressure. Low tire pressure can cause your tires to lose their grip on damp, rainy surfaces. Another helpful tip we recommend is checking your tires tread wear. When your tire treads are worn, your vehicle is not able to handle weather conditions like rain and snow. Worn tire treads make it difficult for your vehicle to grip the road. Regardless of tread wear, many vehicle manufacturers recommend the average driver to replace their tires after 6-10 years. However, you should check the manufacturer’s recommendations on your specific tires. Although there are many ways to check your tires at home, we highly recommend seeing a professional. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown we offer many vehicle services including tire inspections. With a Tire Center located in our dealership, we can help you find the best tires for your Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Why You Should Change Your Windshield Wiper Blades

Poor visibility of the road is one of the most common causes of car accidents. Having good quality wipers is crucial to your overall safety when driving. Whether or not you live in an area that experiences a lot of rain or snow, it is important to maintain your wipers throughout the year. Your vehicles wipers will get worn out over time, even if you don’t use them that often. It is recommended to change your windshield wiper blades every six months. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown we compiled a small list of helpful tips for your windshield wiper blades. Inspect Them at Home Inspect your wiper blades to see if any pieces of the rubber is chipped or broken. You can do this by lifting each windshield wiper arm off the glass and running your finger along the rubber edge. If your blades seem to be in good condition but aren’t cleaning properly, you can clean them by using windshield washer fluid or glass cleaner with a damp rag. Clean off any debris that is on the rubber and the area of the windshield where the wiper blades sit. Replace Your Wipers Be sure to always replace your wipers blades as a pair. If one blade is worn out, the other blade will soon be worn out too. You do not want to wear one blade out quicker than usual by making it do more work than the other. Buying New Windshield Wiper Blades Remember that all windshields are built differently. When buying new wipers, you should know the year, make, and model of your vehicle. You should also measure your existing blades to make sure you are buying the right size. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown, we recommend seeing a professional. With a Parts Center located in our dealership that is stocked with the best quality Mercedes-Benz parts, we will help you find the best fit windshield wiper blades. Whether you need an oil change for your GLS 450 or a tire alignment for your AMG GLC 43, our highly trained team will gladly help. Schedule a service online or contact us today! We look forward to seeing you at our Mercedes-Benz dealership located at 630 Middle Country Road, Saint James, NY!

Signs of Low Car Coolant/Antifreeze

Your car’s coolant/antifreeze is the most important fluid underneath the hood of your vehicle. Serious damage can be done to your vehicle if your coolant/antifreeze is running low. What does coolant/antifreeze do? Coolant/antifreeze circulates throughout the engine, maintaining the temperature of the engine to prevent it from overheating. Depending on the model and year of your car, you may experience an automatic engine cut-off if it is running low. However, if your car is not equipped with this feature, you may damage or even destroy certain parts of your vehicle. Warning signs of low or no coolant/antifreeze: Dashboard warning light: When coolant/antifreeze is low, your vehicle may notify you on its dashboard. However, not all cars are equipped with this feature. Rising temperature gauge: A rising temperature gauge may be due to an increase in your engine’s temperature. Automatic engine cut-off: Most modern cars are equipped with an automatic engine cut-off feature. When coolant is low, your engine will start to heat up. The feature will automatically shut off to prevent damaging the engine. Once your engine cools down, you will be able to drive your car again. Poor fuel economy: If you notice your car is burning through gas a lot quicker than usual, this may be due to a lack of coolant/antifreeze. At the right temperature, your car engine will burn fuel efficiently. When the temperature of your engine changes, it does not burn fuel efficiently. Internal heating system not working properly: If your heater is blowing constant hot air or not working at all, a larger problem may reside underneath your vehicle’s hood due to a lack of coolant/antifreeze. Distinct sweet smell: Coolant/antifreeze has a very unique sweet smell. If your vehicle’s coolant/antifreeze leaks, you may notice a sweet smell arise in your vehicle’s cabin. If you are unsure about the status of your vehicle’s coolant/antifreeze, bring your car in for a service at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown! Our highly trained team at our Service Center will gladly help you and provide you with the service you need to ensure you that your car is ready for the winter season. Whether it be a tire replacement, oil change, or even just an inspection, our team is here to help. October Car Care: Car Battery Tips For The Cold Weather

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. We all dread the thought of having to clean and shovel our cars out of snow, but before we know it, that time of the year will be here. With winter just around the corner, it’s crucial to make sure your vehicles battery is in its best working condition. Car batteries must work harder in cold weather conditions to turn on your engine. As the weather starts to get colder, many older car batteries tend to lose their charge. Whether you’re doing some early holiday shopping at Smith Haven Mall or commuting to Suffolk Community College for school or work, getting stuck in the cold with a dead battery is the last thing you would want to happen. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown we suggest seeing a professional to get your battery inspected or changed. The National Automotive Parts Association shared with us some helpful cold weather car battery tips and tricks. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown we compiled a small list of ways to help avoid getting stuck in the cold this winter: Turn Each Power Load Off – When you start your car, energy from the battery supplies ignition to start the motor. Power will be sent to other systems that were left on when you last shut off your car. Make sure your vehicles headlamps, wiper blades, audio system, climate control, and heated seats are turned off before turning off your car. This will help avoid overwhelming your battery the next time you turn your car on on a cold day. Park Your Car in a Garage – If possible, park your car in a garage. A garage protects your vehicle from energy sapping winds. Leaving your vehicle in an enclosed structure that is heated or not, will allow your vehicle to start even on the coldest winter days. Clean the Car Battery – Your battery may be at full capacity however, if corrosion is present it is likely that it may not be able to start your car. There are many tips on how to clean your cars battery at home but here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown we highly recommend seeing a professional to do this service. Although there are many ways to check and maintain your battery, seeing a professional to inspect your battery will give you the peace of mind you need for this upcoming winter season. October Car Care: Maintaining Your Cars Lights

Most car owners tend to pay the least amount of attention to their cars headlights and taillights. However, your cars lights are extremely important when it comes to your overall safety. Your lights allow you to see the road during the night and in low light conditions. Not only do they allow you to see the road, they allow others to see you on the road! Maintaining your cars lights is extremely crucial during the winter time considering it gets dark earlier this time of the year. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown, we compiled a small list of tips on how to maintain your cars lights. Dust and debris can layer on top of the cover of your headlights, taillights, and brake lights. Getting your car washed can help solve this problem. The interior of your lights covers should be cleaned as well. You can look at your vehicles owner’s manual for instructions on how to remove the bulb covers, or you can see a professional and have them do it for you. When you change any of your lights, it is important to understand that even if one light needs to be replaced, you should replace both. You do not want to be driving with one light significantly dimmer than the other. You should see a professional if you feel your lights are not as bright as they should be. Waiting too long can result in one or all of your bulbs going out. And what’s worse than driving in the dark with dim lights? Driving with no lights at all! It’s best to get your lights checked by a professional as soon as possible to avoid this from happening. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown, we highly recommend scheduling a service with a professional to take care of your car. Fall Car Care: Tire Tips

When we transition from fall to winter, it is crucial to make sure your tires are in good condition. Your safety depends a whole lot on the condition of your tires – they give you the ability to grip the road, make safe turns, and stop in a safe amount of time. How To Maintain Tires Check Tire Pressure We suggest keeping your tire pressure at the recommended level which can be found in your vehicle owner’s manual. Be aware that cooler temperatures will change your tire pressure. Low tire pressure can cause your tires to lose their grip on damp, rainy surfaces. Check Tread Wear When your tire treads are worn, your vehicle is not able to handle weather conditions like rain and snow. April is National Car Care Month

Why April? In April, as winter comes to an end, it is time to get your car ready for spring driving and summer road trips! National Car Care Month reminds you to take care of any issues that may have occurred or been ignored during winter. Spring driving brings its own hazard such as slick, wet roads. It is important to make sure your tires, brakes and windshield wiper are ready for the rain. National Car Care Month in April is the time of year to give your car some extra attention. Basic maintenance can go a long way toward improving the safety and dependability of your vehicle, plus it helps avoid costly repairs down the road. “Neglected vehicle care almost always means much higher costs down the line in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Chances are if you own a car, it needs some work. National Car Care Month in April is the perfect time to focus on your vehicle’s maintenance needs.” Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown Service Department is here for all your Spring service needs! Call us at (877) 862-7343. The Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your car operating at its best: Check the oil, filters, and fluids. Oil should be checked at every fill-up and changed per the owner’s manual recommended intervals. Brake, transmission, power steering, coolant and windshield washer fluids should also be checked regularly. Your car’s filters, including those for the transmission, fuel system and interior ventilation, need regular inspection and replacement. Inspect hoses at each oil change and have them replaced when leaking, brittle, cracked, rusted, swollen or restricted. Check V-belts and serpentine belts for looseness and condition, and have them replaced when cracked, frayed, glazed or showing signs of excessive wear. Check the engine brake system every year and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. Check that the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. The battery should be securely mounted. If it is three years old or more, the battery should be tested and replaced if necessary. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay. Schedule a tune-up that will help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions. Check the car’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons, such as defrosting. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually, including shock absorbers and struts, and chassis parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components. Check the pressure of all tires, including the spare, at least once a month. Check the tread for uneven or irregular wear and cuts and bruises along the sidewalls. Have your car’s alignment checked at least annually to reduce tire wear and improve fuel economy and handling. Test exterior and interior lights and have bulbs that are not working checked immediately. Replace windshield wiper blades every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering for optimum wiping performance and safety. Spring Maintenance Checklist

After a harsh Winter on Long Island, with plummeting temperatures, a little bit of snow and some road salt, your Mercedes-Benz vehicle may need some extra care. Say goodbye to winter, for now, by preparing with this Spring maintenance checklist. Come into Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown for an oil and oil filter change. In order to maintain a healthy engine, it is crucial that you schedule regular oil changes. It's natural for your engine to pick up some impurities while your motor oil lubricates and cools the engine, this is okay, but over time the motor oil becomes less effective. This is why it is important to regularly schedule oil and oil filter changes. If you're using old motor oil it becomes harder for the oil to do its job of protecting your engine. Schedule an appointment with Competition Auto before spring comes around, so you can enjoy the warm weather without having to worry. Have your battery tested and replaced. During the winter, your battery works harder by slowing the chemical reactions. Now that the weather is getting warmer, there's a chance you might have problems with your battery. Come schedule an appointment with one of our technicians at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown's Service Department to test your vehicle's battery to avoid dealing with a car that may not want to start. Check tire pressure and tread. Check your tire pressure before you leave the house in the morning and adjust your tires based on the reading. The constant changes in the Winter weather could cause fluctuations in your tire pressure. Tires generally lose up to 1 PSI (pound per square inch) for every 10-degree temperature drop, and both over-inflated or under-inflated tires can start causing problems for you on the road. This is also the perfect time to check your tire tread as well. Without a sufficient tread, your tires have less of a grip on the road, which could cause your car to have issues when dealing with wet weather or having to come to a quick stop. Thankfully, you only need one thing to check your tire tread. Grab a penny and try out the penny test! Replace wiper blades and refill wiper fluid. After a long Winter of wiping snow and ice from your windshield, your windshield wipers may be looking rough. If your windshield wipers seem to be smearing water across the windshield or just aren't doing their job, it may be time for a windshield wiper cleaning or new windshield wipers. If a simple wiper cleaning doesn't fix the issue, then it is time to change your windshield wiper blades to prepare for the upcoming spring and summer rainstorms.  Make sure not to forget to top off your wiper fluid as well. Clean your lights or replace the bulbs. You may be thinking that you need glasses if you're finding yourself to be squinting from your driver's seat at night, but you might just need to give your headlights a good scrubbing. People seem to forget that just as your car does, your headlights and taillights get dirty as well. You can polish your headlights with a soft bristle brush, baking soda, and water. If that doesn't work, a simple bulb replacement should solve the problem! Here at Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown, it is our number one priority to care for your Mercedes-Benz just as we would for ourselves. Whether it be assisting you with your oil, battery, oil filter, tire pressure, wiper blades, changing your bulbs, etc., we pride ourselves on taking excellent care of your vehicle. Our trained technicians will gladly examine these things for you, in order to get your Spring Maintenance Checklist in order. Call us today for more info (888) 693-2406.
