Large luxury sedans should take the 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class as an inspiration. It has been the yardstick in measuring large luxury sedans for many years. Although it is constantly updated to make it more current, it is still very much the same with its predecessors. It is made so well that it does not need major changes to make it more superior than its competitors.
Another example of a car that seems to forget about transformations is the 2019 Bentley Flying Spur. Not much of notable changes can be seen from the old model yet it is still considered to be one of those who are able to stay ahead of the pack. It can be tough to compare these vehicles but only one should be on top.
Design & Style
The S-Class is sophisticated both inside and out. The German elegance is very palpable on its exterior. It looks surprisingly elegant given that it is a huge vehicle. This is due to the classy details, like the Swarovski crystal headlights, and incredibly long body. The cabin is also first-class all the way with all the lavish configurations it is treated with.
The Flying Spur, on the other hand, has a graceful exterior. It looks nice but it seems to look more aged now. It still looks imposing, especially with the intricate details. The cabin is also styled well but it looks oddly the same as the Bentley Continental GT.
Technology & Safety
You can definitely say that the S-Class is lavish when it comes to in-car technology. You can appreciate the competitiveness of its maker from the game-changing array of innovative infotainment system. It also impressive how there are more room for advanced safety aids, such as the driver-assistance suite that combines satellite data, sensors, and state-of-the art camera in providing a near autonomous experience.
The Flying Spur is bent on impressing with a theatrical infotainment system. The triangular unit can show either the infotainment screen or the analog readouts for thermometer, compass, and stopwatch. It would be perfect if only it delivers sharp graphics.
Performance
The S-Class is already awe-inspiring at the lowest trim level. The turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine is so powerful at 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. If you want a heart-stopping performance, then the AMG® S 65 trim delivers a sportier take with its 6.0-liter V-12 at 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. It can handle itself well across different road conditions and is smart enough in passing ample power even at faster speeds.
Despite the engine’s best efforts at 626 hp, the Flying Spur significantly lags and does not respond quickly enough. It is a joy to drive but not as confidence-inspiring than the S-Class.
The Bottom Line
The 2019 Bentley Flying Spur may be a competitive vehicle but its characteristics are all over the place. It lacks the restrained elegance of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
