Mercedes-Benz Vans Celebrates 15 Years in Charleston
Mercedes-Benz Vans are celebrating 15 years in Charleston. Over 200,000 Sprinter and Metrics have been assembled in North Charleston and delivered to destinations all over the U.S. In 2006 the small Charleston plant had only 100 employees and was performing semi-knockdown assembly. There are now more than 1,600 team members in the Mercedes-Benz Van facility in North Charleston today!
The Sprinter Van has been a huge success in the U.S. market, so in 2015 they made the decision to expand the existing re-assembly operation into a full-scale production plant with a new body shop, paint shop, and extended assembly building in time for the launch of the new Sprinter. The new facility has been running since 2018, with an investment of more than $500 million. It was announced that the eSprinter is coming to Charleston in 2023!
Ever since the plant was established 15 years ago in Charleston, it has been a key pillar in Mercedes Vans global production network. Eventually the company will be able to meet the demands for battery electric vans and are able to respond to different markets while making optimum use of their capacities. The company is very excited to be the first to produce the next generation of the eSprinter. The plant will be investing 60 million dollars in order to fit for the electrified future.
