How To Change Your Mercedes-Benz Key Battery
Nothing lasts forever, and that goes for your car keys as well. If you drive or own a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, you’ll want to be well-prepared when the time comes for your key fob to run out of battery. Read on to find out not only the step-by-step instructions to changing your Mercedes-Benz key battery, but also the ways to tell when your battery needs replacing.
Signs to Change Your Mercedes-Benz Key Battery
There are various signs that indicate it’s time for a replacement for your Mercedes-Benz key battery. These include the following:
- Vehicle is Unable to Start
When you find that your vehicle has difficulty in starting or may require a long time to get going, it usually suggests that the key fob is running out of battery.
- Warning Light on Dashboard
If the key is in use, the dashboard will illuminate a warning sign to let you know that your key fob has run out of battery. This is one of the most straightforward ways to tell when you should replace your key battery.
- Unable to Lock or Unlock Doors
A low battery key fob is one of the main reasons why the car door lock is not functioning. If you find yourself unable to lock or unlock doors, replacing the key battery can solve the problem. This goes for the panic alarm as well.
Steps to Changing Your Mercedes-Benz Key Battery
If the above warning signs occur, it is highly advisable to take actions in changing your Mercedes-Benz key battery. Here are the step-by-step instructions:
- Determine Your Key Type
First and foremost, it’s important to determine your key type as this plays a part in the process of changing up the batteries. For older Mercedes-Benz models, it is a SmartKey®, which is cased in plastic. If your key fob is cased in metal, then it’s a Chrome Key. There are both old and new Chrome Keys, and this can be further determined by checking the panic button. A circular button represents old while a triangular button represents new.
- Select the Appropriate Batteries
Both the SmartKey® and old Chrome Key require two CR 2025 batteries while the new Chrome Key just requires one.
- Change SmartKey® Batteries
For SmartKey®, you’ll have to pull the latch situated at the end of the key holder. Latch the key horizontally into the key slot, then take the battery compartment out. Now all you have to do is replace the two existing CR 2025 batteries with new ones.
- Change Chrome Key Batteries
In order to change your Chrome Key batteries, you’ll have to pull on the tab at the bottom of the key fob, then push the key into the narrow end of the slot to detach the cover. Simply replace the battery with a new CR 2025.
