2022 Mercedes-Benz E Class vs. 2022 Maserati Ghibli

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E Class is a delightful coupe with a sleek appearance, ample power and the operation of a hybrid system. But what happens when it faces off against the 2022 Maserati Ghibli, a fantastic sports car with dual turbo engines and sheer extravagance?

Design & Style

The Maserati Ghibli has an aerodynamic and gleaming exterior which is built for speed. The cabin is swanky, with surfaces covered in materials such as leather, metallic trim and natural wood. This year it comes in three trim levels, with the GT being the most luxurious. It can seat a maximum of five passengers and can be purchased as a 4 door sedan.

In addition to the coupe, the Mercedes-Benz E Class can be purchased in the form of a sedan or cabriolet. Changes for this year include a substantial increase in its power and the introduction of a moderate hybrid option. Adapted headlights and automated high beams have also been standardized. The Mercedes-Benz E Class is distinctive for its elongated wheelbase, dipped nose and shortened frontal overhangs. Both the coupe and convertible come with two doors.

Technology & Safety

The Mercedes-Benz E Class is extremely well equipped, so much so that the IIHS awarded it the Top Safety Pick+ while the NHTSA bestowed its prestigious five star rating. Just a few of the countermeasures that it has includes blind area monitoring, parking sensors, airbags, automated emergency brakes, and pedestrian detection. Comforts within its cabin include voice commands, 64 ambient lights, a Burmester sound system, Google Maps and seats that provide back massages.

The Maserati Ghibli also comes with various standardized driver assistance functions, though it has not yet earned the same accolades as the Mercedes-Benz. These include lane management, semi-autonomous operation, adapted cruise control, pedestrian detection and emergency automated brakes. Comforts within its cabin include a ten inch touch display, satellite radio from SiriusXM, fifteen speaker sound system from Bowers & Wilkins and climate control.

Performance

Those that purchase the Maserati Ghibli will get a V6, dual turbo engine that can generate 345 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in about 4.7 seconds. Those that purchase the Mercedes-Benz E Class AMG® E 53 will get an engine that can generate 429 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in 4.1 seconds.

The Bottom Line

Both cars seat the same number of passengers and offer similar performance. But the Mercedes-Benz E Class has far better safety credentials with more gear designed to protect its passengers, and the Maserati Ghibli’s thirsty powertrains, unpolished internal switchgear and tight back seats makes the Mercedes-Benz E Class the winner.
