The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C Class is a swanky car with an ornate appearance, large touch displays and a mild hybrid option. How does it compare to the 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia, a car which has garnered praise for its refined curves, posh cabin and quick steering?
Design & Style
The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a compact and sporty Italian sedan with wonderful performance and turbocharged power. It can seat up to five people, and its newest features for the year include rear and front seats which can be heated and cooled, aluminum pedals and wireless charging for smartphones. A triangular style grille can be seen in front with rounded curves along the sides. Its extended hood, low stance and shortened deck complete the look.
The Mercedes-Benz C Class has 4 doors and can also seat five. Like the Alfa Romeo, its designers utilized an extended hood, lower stance and shortened trunk, but the difference is in the mesh grille and faceted taillights. Additionally, within the cabin passengers will be presented with dual standardized displays that are 12.3 inches in size, which are designed to phase out traditional gauges.
Technology & Safety
The Mercedes-Benz C Class has earned both an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ along with a pristine 5 star NHTSA rating. This is due to its extensive range of safety gear, which includes adapted LEDs, blind area monitoring, automated emergency brakes and activated lane control. Comforts within its cabin include ambient illumination, the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, multizone climate control, wireless charging for smartphones and Burmester audio system.
While the Alfa Romeo Giulia earned a good review from the IIHS due to its headlights and crash test performance, it failed to earn the Top Safety Pick since it hasn’t yet undergone a side impact test, which is the most stringent. That being said, it is equipped with many of the features found in the Mercedes-Benz, such as parking sensors, activated lane control, blind area monitoring and emergency automated brakes.
Performance
The Alfa Romeo Giulia is formidable. Those that purchase the turbo 4 variant will get a 2 liter engine that can generate 280 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in about 5 seconds. Those that purchase the Mercedes-Benz C Class will also get a turbo 4 engine that is 2 liter and capable of generating 255 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in five seconds.
The Bottom Line
For all intents and purposes, both these cars are nearly tied when it comes to horsepower and zero to sixty acceleration. They also seat the same number of passengers. The real difference is in the safety credentials, where the Mercedes-Benz C Class has a better track record and accolades. Furthermore, the Alfa Romeo Giulia has no manual transmission, its fast steering can become a hassle on highways and the back seat space is fair at best, which makes the Mercedes-Benz C Class the winner.
