As the competitive landscape in the automotive industry continues to evolve, new competitors are popping up all over the place. One of these new entrants comes from an unexpected source, with Mercedes-Benz joining the fray with the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which arrives at a time when BMW has been struggling to make sense of its 3-Series lineup and how it relates to its larger 7-Series and 5-Series models in its range. So, what does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class bring to the table that makes it so appealing?
Design & Style
In terms of exterior design, both cars have a sporty look that can really make you stand out in a crowd. The difference here is mostly in little details, as each car is going to feel fast and sleek on the road regardless of which you choose. With that said, if you’re looking for something with a unique body style, there are only a few differences between them worth mentioning. For example, the 2022 BMW 3-Series gives drivers an option between classic and modern headlights; meanwhile, the 2022 Mercedes A-Class offers full LED lights from front to back (including taillights). Aside from that slight difference, though—it’s hard to say there’s much else separating these two cars from an aesthetic perspective!
Smart, sleek, and elegant, these cars have a look that’s all their own. But in many ways, their cabins are more alike than different—with few notable exceptions. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class comes standard with 5G and a dual camera on every trim level that offers a driver assistance feature called Traffic Pilot that can automatically steer, accelerate and brake to keep you in your lane as well as maintain a safe distance from other vehicles ahead of you and automatically apply brakes when needed to avoid collisions! The 2022 BMW 3 Series does not offer any high-tech safety features like Traffic Pilot, which can be especially helpful for newer drivers who are still learning to navigate congested city streets or highways. Another important technology available on all trim levels of the new 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is adaptive cruise control with stop & go capability.
Performance
Both vehicles have pretty good engines for torque and horsepower: 2022 BMW 3-Series comes with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with 176hp and 185 lb-ft of torque, while 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class delivers a 1.5L turbocharged engine that produces 178 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque under its hood. However, it is not likely to knock you off your feet – especially if you are driving around in an urban area where there is a stoplight every couple of blocks (and traffic signals), so you may have time to deal with less than ideal RPMs; on highways with fewer obstacles or way out in sparsely populated areas where speed limits are higher, both of these vehicles provide quite good acceleration when compared to each other.
The Bottom Line
While both cars were well-positioned in their segments by their manufacturers, I feel the 2022 BMW 3-Series enjoys a slight edge as a more complete package than its opponent. Yet, if you are looking for an alternative to all of those new designs, then your best bet would be to turn towards the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which will most likely deliver some substantial changes when it comes out in 2022!
