The 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a captivating small luxury car that has the same pleasing personalities as the E and S-Class. The only difference is that the wonderful features are wrapped in a tiny package. It is no slouch both in style and performance and it can definitely be on top of other compact cars in terms of advanced tech features.
Although it is technically new, the 2021 Genesis G70 has already received plenty of attention after its debut last year. Let us check if it is a good contender against the newest C-Class in this comparison.
Design & Style
The new C-Class features a swoopy styling that makes the exterior look more appealing than its brothers. The LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are lovely additions to the already impressive exterior features. Just like its siblings, the C-Class has a ritzy interior. The sleek layout looks modern with a “floating” touchscreen display on top of the three circular air vents at the center stack.
It may be distantly related to the Kia Stinger but the G70 looks far from it. It borrows; instead, some styling cues from the bigger G80 and G90 models. It has sportier proportions and looks stylish but the design details are far from practical. The interior has controls that are sensibly arranged but does not look as stunning as the C-Class’ dash.
Technology & Safety
The base infotainment equipment for the C-Class is already enviable compared to most of its rivals. The 7-inch display has sharp graphics, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and there is already an HD radio with the five-speaker sound system. There are plenty of options to upgrade, including the Burmester surround-sound audio setup.
The G70 shares the same infotainment system from costly Hyundai models but the added functions made the whole system more complex. It comes with a few driver-assist features that are not nearly as sophisticated as other luxury vehicles.
Performance
A standard 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivers up to 255-hp for the base model of the C-Class. It provides intuitive shifts without demanding a lot from the driver. The power delivery is smooth and sufficient. The Comfort drive mode is enough for a nice drive but it can be liven up using the Sport mode.
The base trim for the G70 is also powered by a 2.0-liter engine but can only peak at 252 hp. A responsive and powerful driving can be expected only on the higher trims with the V6 engine.
The Bottom Line
The 2021 Genesis G70 still has a long way to go if it wants to outperform the 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The latter has more experience in delivering that premium quality that luxury car buyers expect.
