What Do Mercedes-Benz Dashboard Warning Lights And Symbols Mean?

Despite warning lights flashing and using bright colors, people still somehow manage to ignore them. That’s the last thing they should do. To indicate problems with your vehicle, warning lights play a vital role in telling you that something needs immediate action or, at the very least, to be checked.

Different vehicles, even different years of the same manufacturer’s vehicle, have different lights and warning systems. We will try to cover most of them here, but there will likely be variations, depending on your vehicle.

Lights and Vehicles

Whether you’re driving a GLD, class C, or class A vehicle – or something else – Mercedes-Benz dashboard warning lights basically follow the same system as traffic lights.

  • Red indicates that there is a potentially dangerous problem, but at the very least, serious. As soon as you can safely do so, you should stop driving.
  • Yellow indicates that, as soon as possible, you should get something checked out. In the meantime, take care because, clearly, something’s not working properly.
  • Green means that something is currently being used and/or that the system is working correctly.

Battery Charge Warning

This red symbol looks like a small battery with a + on the left and a – on the right. Your battery isn’t charging if this light comes on. There could be a number of causes for this, so it should be checked out by your mechanic or a dealer service center.

Low Tire Pressure Warning

This symbol is in yellow. It looks a bit like a tire that is low on air, with the sides bulging out. There is a little tread on the bottom and an ! In the middle of the symbol. This could be a puncture, or your tire simply could be low on air.

Low Engine Oil Light

Either your oil pressure/level is too low, or the temperature of your oil is too high if this red symbol comes on. It looks like a little oil can with a drop coming out the spout. Irreparable damage could be caused if you don’t get this checked out as soon as possible.

Coolant Levels Warning Light

This looks like wavy fluid lines with a thermometer sticking up out of the middle. This yellow warning light indicates that you need to top off your coolant levels because they are probably on the low side. Without sufficient coolant, you should not make long journeys.

If the car overheats, this symbol will turn red. A more serious problem could be the cause here.

Power Steering Warning Light

This looks like a little red steering wheel with a ! to the right of it. If there’s a problem with your power steering, this light will glow. Try turning your car off – after finding a safe place to pull over – and then, after 30 seconds, turn your car back on again. Bring your car to a Mercedes-Benz mechanic if the light stays on.

Check Engine Warning Light

This looks like a yellow outline of a little engine. You may hear or feel the engine working improperly if this warning light flashes. Stuttering or a lack of power may occur. There are a wide range of problems that could be indicated by this light. Get your vehicle checked out right away.

Brake Fluid Warning Light/Parking Brake

This looks like a circle (inside of parentheses) with a ! inside. After you fully release the parking brake, this light may appear. While you’re driving, it may appear indicating a low brake fluid level. You may want this checked by a service center unless you know how to check it yourself.

The braking system may have malfunctioned if the ABS warning light is illuminated as well. You may have problems with the functionality of your brakes. The EBD (electronic brake force distribution) warning light in this case may also be illuminated.

This only touches on the warning lights that exist, but they are some of the most frequently noticed.
