The Powerful Engines behind Mercedes-Benz AMG® Vehicles
Mercedes-AMG® is the line of Mercedes-Benz performance vehicles. At the heart of the AMG® experience is the engine. There are six different AMG® engines that have different effects on the level of performance for your Mercedes-AMG® vehicle.
Handcrafted 2.0-liter Inline-4 Turbo (M133)
According to the Mercedes-Benz AMG® website, “this gem of an engine generates more power per liter than any power plant in a production automobile”. This engine produces 375 hp and 350 lb/ft of torque which means that it can go from 0-60 in only 4.3 seconds. The Multi-Spark Ignition causes the ignition coils to recharge significantly quicker than a standard engine which causes more controlled and complete combustion. Dramatically reducing boost lag resulting in rapid acceleration, the Twin-Scroll Turbocharger is perfect for several of the Mercedes-AMG® vehicles such as the GLA 45.
Handcrafted 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo (M177)
This 4.0-liter biturbo engine is the power behind the E 63 S Sedan, E 63 S Wagon and the GT 63 S 4-door Coupe. With up to 630 hp and up to 664 lb-ft of torque, this engine is a “technical tour de force”. Having the turbos mounted inside of the engine valley as opposed to outside provides the optimum response time, low exhaust emissions, and shorter air paths. To prevent this beast of an engine from overheating, there are air-to-water intercoolers which leads to more efficient power production
.
Handcrafted 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo (M178)
Using the same block as the M177, this knockout engine uses a dry-sump lubrication system that pumps oil in and out of the engine as needed from an external oil reservoir. With up to 577 hp and 516 lb/ft of torque, this engine has been added to the GT, GT C, and GT R. With a low center of gravity, this V8 Biturbo engine offers better handling and stability. Mounting the turbos inside of the engine valley allows for the optimum response time allowing for low exhaust emissions and shorter air paths.
Handcrafted 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo (M157)
Producing massive power, the 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine produces up to 577 hp and up to 664 lb/ft of torque. Going from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds, this engine provides an increased level of power and efficiency with direct fuel injection and variable camshaft timing. For the optimal fuel-economy, there is an extensive computer system designed to regulate the opening and closing of the engine valves. This engine is the power behind several Mercedes-AMG® vehicles such as the GLS 63.
Handcrafted 6.0-liter V12 Biturbo (M279)
This beast of an engine is an Mercedes-AMG® enthusiast’s dream. Powering vehicles like the Mercedes-AMG® S 65 Sedan, this engine features Twin Turbochargers which offers up to 22 psi of boost and Rapid-Multispark Ignition which provides a smooth ride and more effective combustion. The 6.0-liter V12 Biturbo Engine achieves up to 621 hp and 738 lb/ft of torque.
AMG®-enhanced 3.0-liter V6 Biturbo (M276)
Powering vehicles like the GLE 43 Coupe, this compact engine features unique red accents and is equipped with Lightweight Alloy Block to maximize efficiency and the potential output. This adaptable powerplant reaches up to 385 hp and up to 384 lb/ft of torque.
