How To Identify Mercedes-Benz Transmission Failure Symptoms
How To Identify Mercedes-Benz Transmission Failure Symptoms
There are hundreds upon hundreds of parts and components in your car that make up numerous systems. Though some act relatively alone, they all basically work together to keep your car running. One such system is your transmission. When there are problems with that, if not seen to as soon as possible, further damage to your vehicle can occur.
If you had to recognize transmission failure symptoms, could you? If you did notice symptoms and recognized them, would you know what to do? Let’s look at some signs and symptoms that point to something being amiss with your Mercedes-Benz transmission.
Unresponsiveness
When you attempt to go from park to drive, or change gears (in a manual transmission vehicle), and your vehicle doesn’t respond, transmission service is likely needed.
Strange Sounds
If you know your vehicle relatively well, you’ll know what sounds it makes on a regular basis. Hearing something unusual or out of the ordinary usually points to a problem. Clunking, whining, or humming noises are never good. Get them checked out.
Shaking or Grinding
When the gears change, shaking or grinding may occur if there’s a transmission problem, usually in cars with automatic transmissions. Don’t wait to get this checked out.
The Dreaded Check Engine Light
Nobody wants to see the “Check Engine” light go on. If you do, however, it can point to any number of things – one of those being a problem with your transmission.
Fluid Leak
This is easily identifiable due to the fact you’ll probably see a stain or puddle under your vehicle. Your transmission fluid is sweet smelling and red, in most cases.
Dragging Clutch
When you press the clutch pedal, the flywheel in your vehicle and the clutch disc do not disengage in the case of a dragging clutch. So, when shifting gears, the car moves and the gears clash. Misplacement of the clutch or some other mechanical failure is usually to blame.
Slipping Gears
If, while you’re driving, your gears slip in and out, it can be very alarming. It’s also dangerous. If, during a gear change, you hear your engine revving, that’s what’s happening. Other symptoms can include the following when you try to shift gears:
- Harsh response
- Strange noises
- Acceleration delay
When in Neutral, You Hear Noises
Cars make noise. But there are certain noises that, if you’re not used to hearing them, can point to trouble. When your car is in neutral, if you hear strange noises, transmission problems could be to blame. Hopefully transmission fluid is just needed. You may also need your transmission fluid replaced altogether and the transmission itself flushed, or your transmission replaced completely.
Burning Odor
You should never smell something burning when it comes to your car. Immediately make your way to the services of an automotive technician if you ever notice a burning odor coming from your car. It might be that the fluid in your transmission is burnt and old and/or could be an indication that overheating is occurring in your transmission.
Your Vehicle Won’t Switch Gears
If, in order to change gears, your vehicle struggles or flat out refuses, the transmission system likely has issues. It might be that your transmission fluid is the wrong kind or the level is low.
Any and all of the above stated symptoms point to the fact that you need to, at the very least, get your Mercedes-Benz checked out by a reputable service technician. Here’s who you can turn to…
