Surges or Lags in the Engine

ECUs control engine timing and fuel efficiency, and you may notice lags or surges if the module is malfunctioning. For instance, when your vehicle lags or stutters when you step on the accelerator, it’s because the faulty ECU is not giving your engine enough fuel.

When your engine is over-fueled, it can surge and cause your fuel economy to suffer. It is also possible for the ECU to alter the timing of your engine.

Warning Light on Check Engine

The check engine light usually illuminates when trouble begins. The ECU controls this dashboard warning light, which flashes if the ECU malfunctions. A malfunction of this sort is usually the result of a false alarm, meaning the engine control unit turned on the check engine light because it thought another part or system of the engine was malfunctioning. It is usually the fault of an ECU or an electrical system that causes false check engine warnings.

Stalls and Misfires in Engines

It is possible that your engine will misfire and/or stall if the above problems are severe. ECUs control spark plug firing and a faulty ECU will result in misfiring plugs if the order is compromised. It’s possible for your engine to sputter or even stall while it’s stopped and idling or in motion when you’re idling roughly. Performance problems can also be caused by the amount of fuel sent through the engine.

Starting Problem with Your Car

The engine control module controls the engine, as its name implies. A completely dead ECM will prevent your car from starting. In addition, if the ECU malfunctions, you could experience engine cuts while driving. You can’t restart your vehicle once it has come to a stop. If you notice any problems with your engine control module, you should get it tested right away. In the event of such a problem, your car must be repaired before it dies.
