The 2022 Mercedes Benz G Class has an imposing presence, with a royal interior, off-road capability and a six figure price tag. How does it stack up against the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban, a vehicle considered by some to be the emperor of SUVs due to its massive size, brutal power, and every modern gadget known to man?

Design & Style

The Chevrolet Suburban is a rectangular SUV with a prominent front grille and boxy corners. The sides are masterfully sculpted and less slabby than previous generations. The windows are spacious giving excellent visibility to passengers within and the cabin has 10.2 inch touchscreens that will inform and entertain, with seats that are fun to sit in. Those that purchase the Z71 edition will be able to go off-road.

The Mercedes Benz G Class also has an angular appearance, with exposed hinges, prominent lines and side strips that are attached in various places. It looks more German than most vehicles manufactured by this brand, and many people love it that way. Passengers will be treated to dual 12.3 inch screens, 3 differential locks and toggle switches.

Technology & Safety

The Mercedes Benz G Class is almost a tank when it comes to protecting its occupants. It has all sorts of gadgets and systems designed to prevent collisions before they occur, such as blind area monitoring, a camera with surround view and emergency automated brakes. But its huge size and reinforced frame mean that most vehicles that hit it will suffer more than the G Class will. Luxuries within its cabin include powered seats that will massage your back, climate control and supple leather.

The Chevrolet Suburban has received a four star rating from the NHTSA. It has emergency automated brakes, parking sensors, the ability to detect pedestrians automatically and cruise and lane control. Perks within its cabin include the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, climate control which covers three zones, heated/cooled seats, a mirror which auto dims and Bose sound system with nine speakers.

Performance

The Chevrolet Suburban may resemble a Mammoth, but it doesn’t handle like one. It is equipped with a V8, 5.3 liter engine that can generate 355 horsepower with 383 pounds of torque. The Mercedes Benz G Class is equipped with dual turbo V8 that can generate 416 horsepower that is wedded to an automatic nine speed transmission.

The Bottom Line

Both of these SUVs come with a V8 engine, but the Mercedes Benz G Class is more powerful, its touchscreens are larger and the third row in the Chevrolet Suburban doesn’t recline and it lacks many safety features that should be standard, making the Mercedes the winner.
