The 2022 Mercedes Benz C Class is a star performer. Its ferocious handling, array of engine options and impeccable luxury makes it the car of choice for the well-heeled. But can it compete against the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro, an American muscle car with agile handling, magnetic dampers and the latest tech?
Design & Style
The newest Camaro displays a sleek yet retro appearance. It has an elevated beltline with a roof that has been lowered and rear haunches which are wider than previous editions. The nose has a grille which is broad and high set, with a central section that is tucked with expansive fenders. The cabin is rich in contrast stitching, air vents and upholstery which come in two tones. The Mercedes Benz C class comes in three body choices, which are sedan, convertible and coupe. Many drivers love the coupe due to its flair and sloping roofline. The exterior is smooth and aerodynamic with a cabin that features dual 12.3 inch displays. The left functions as an instrument cluster that can be configured, while the right is for infotainment. The comfortable leather seats and spherical air vents complete the look.
Technology & Safety
Mercedes Benz takes safety very seriously. To that end the C Class has captured the prestigious Top Safety Pick award, and comes with a variety of protective countermeasures which include automated emergency brakes, driver assistance, cruise control that is adaptive, multiple airbags, and the ability to recognize speed limits and automatically evade if a collision appears imminent. Cabin perks include powered and ventilated seats, infotainment screens, smartphone compatibility and climate control.
Although the Chevrolet Camaro has earned respectable scores on its crash tests, it does not have active safety functions and its outward vision is poor. Despite this it did receive a five star NHTSA rating for its blind area monitoring, parking sensors and rollover protection. Perks within its cabin include heated/cooled seats, Bose audio system with nine speakers, eight inch touchscreens and satellite radio.
Performance
The Chevrolet Camaro has built a reputation for its power and performance, and the newest edition doesn’t disappoint. It is outfitted with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 275 horsepower with 295 pounds of torque, enabling it to accelerate from zero to sixty in around 5.4 seconds. The Mercedes Benz C Class is also equipped with a turbo 4 engine that is 2 liter and capable of generating 255 horsepower, enabling it to go from zero to sixty in 5.7 seconds.
The Bottom Line
While the Camaro may have a powerful engine, the Mercedes Benz is safer to drive. The Chevy’s lousy outward vision is a major safety hazard, and both its trunk and back seat are too small, which makes the Mercedes Benz C Class the winner.
