The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB is an impressive SUV across the board. It is spacious, rich in the latest technology, offers good handling and the seat in the second row slides. But can it surpass the 2021 BMW X2, a sport utility vehicle that has received praise for its expressive style, joyful handling and roomy interior?
Design & Style
The BMW X2 is easy on the eyes, especially when you get exterior colors like Magma Red or Sunset Orange. The roofline is slightly lower than the BMW X1, with a wider selection of hues. Within the cabin, the seats are nice and cushy with controls that are organized and readily accessible. Buyers get the option of multiple trims which can allow them to customize the cabin as they see fit. The Mercedes-Benz GLB is a crossover SUV with 3 rows and upright rectangular stance. The corners are spherical, with a cabin that is decked out in large displays, metallic trim, soothing leather seats and ambient lighting that comes in sixty four different shades.
Technology & Safety
The Mercedez-Benz GLB is equipped with all the latest and greatest safety features. These include standardized blind area monitoring, automated emergency brakes, cruise and lane control, tires that can run flat, parking assistance and a camera with surround view. Cabin amenities include keyless start, powered seats that can be heated or cooled, dual ten inch touchscreens and panoramic roof. While the BMW X2 has most of the safety features found in the Mercedes-Benz GLB, the IIHS did criticize it for its headlights, and some of its protective features are not available unless you purchase the Premium Package. Its cabin perks include climate control, Apple CarPlay, 8.8 inch displays and ventilated seats.
Performance
The BMW X2 offers respectable turbo 4 performance. Its engine is 2 liter and capable of generating 228 horsepower with 258 pounds of torque that is wedded to an eight speed automatic transmission. The Mercedes-Benz GLB is also equipped with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 221 horsepower with 258 pounds of torque. It has special padding which minimizes sound while operating and its shifting ability is quite impressive.
The Bottom Line
Though both SUVs are essentially tied when it comes to performance, the BMW’s headlights have received poor reviews from the IIHS, its cruise control is overpriced, and many of its safety features require you to spend extra, which is unacceptable given the necessity of protecting passengers from potential collisions and accidents, so the Mercedes-Benz GLB is the winner.
