2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC vs. 2019 BMW X3

The expectations for compact crossovers are rising and the new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC is a best-seller in this segment because of its versatility that most consumers want. This small luxury crossover addresses the practical needs of having an SUV but does so with style. The 2020 version hosts a few changes in order to impress luxury car buyers even more. Many drivers will be pleased that the new GLC provides plenty of options to have more tech upgrades and style customization.

Another promising compact crossover is the 2019 BMW X3. It is due for becoming a hybrid soon but this 2019 version is bent to delivering expectations.

Design & Style

The new GLC is tailored to show cutting-edge luxury both outside and inside the cabin. The sleek styling is prominent on the fresh details, such as the sporty proportions and clean lines along its body. The cabin is not only spacious but also looks opulent. It gives you a choice between three natural grain kinds of wood to advance its refinement. Aside from being fashionable, the roomy seats are also functional. They fold down in a 40/20/40 split to accommodate different people/parcel combinations.

The X3 has a major design overhaul two years ago and not much has changed for the 2019 version. It looks very much alike with the 2018 model year although it has wider intakes and a much-lowered look. The rear lights are also bigger to give it a better finish.

Technology & Safety

What’s exciting about the new GLC is that its MBUX infotainment system is made even smarter with AI technology. You can literally “talk” your way in controlling everything from the temperature to navigating the map. It also has the Me Connect feature to let you remotely access basic car functions like Remote Start or lock/unlock the car using a mobile phone.

The X3 has mixed digital and analog instrumentations for its infotainment. They work well but you need to pay for Apple CarPlay and it does not support Android Auto.

The GLC is boosted to deliver up to 255 hp for its base model. It offers a refined ride with its multilink suspension which allows it to have a good grip in curves and glide over bumps. It instantly firms up during sharp turns so passengers feel comfortable even in rugged and twisty roads.

A 248 hp engine is under the hood of the standard model for the X3. It responds quickly but the steering can be too light and imprecise.

The Bottom Line

The elite performance of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC will easily make you forget that there is a 2019 BMW X3 around. The GLC has a satisfying road character, a sense of style, and a tech-forward personality.
