Subcompact vehicles have come a long way from being regarded only as a cheaper alternative to full-sized cars. More interest has been placed on this segment nowadays because today’s small vehicles are well-equipped with features and modern instruments.
Such description is true with both the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the 2020 BMW 2-Series. These luxury subcompacts truly changed the way their segment is viewed since they have amazing features that are commendable.
Design & Style
Even though it is a small car, the A-Class is still able to pull off the same level of sophistication that other Mercedes-Benz vehicles evoke. Its exterior is the right balance of being formidable and sporty. The shape is stylish and has a confident stance. The cabin is also classy with convincingly soft synthetic leather on the seats. The circular vents and other intricate details also elevated the style factor of its interior.
The 2-Series has stylish details that are reminiscent of the iconic BMW 2002. It has more glass compared to its predecessors and a more aggressive shape. While it may look good on the outside, the 2-Series failed to offer a sense of glam on its cabin with the hard plastic materials all over. The interior is boring and it is noticeable how cramped it is on the rear.
Technology & Safety
Aside from looking stylish, the cabin on the A-Class is also modern with its advanced tech features. The standard 7-inch displays may be upgraded for the 10.3-inch but both delivers sharp graphics. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard equipment and it has a voice recognition system that supports natural speech detection.
The 2-Series has a very minimal infotainment system. The menu structure is logical with a rotary knob for the controls. Although there is an optional navigation, only Apple CarPlay is available and free for only the first year.
Performance
The 2.0-liter 188-hp engine under the hood of the new A-Class delivers a better ride. It is smoother and more efficient as it is paired to a 7-speed dual clutch AT. It springs softer and has optional adaptive dampers that enable the car for a sportier handling.
The 2-Series is a good performer with its turbocharged 2.0-liter engine for up to 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The ride quality is compliant but seat comfort is only limited to the front seats. It can be uncomfortable to ride in the cramped rear seats even with the sport-focused drivability.
The Bottom Line
The 2020 BMW 2-Series is too uptight compared to the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class. The 2-Series seems to restrain itself from giving more advanced features while the A-Class is very indulgent with plenty of innovative technology and stylish details.
